36hp Engine

Recently I was approached by the shop supervisor, Sexy, to comment on my learning ability and eagerness. So he offered me an exam. The exam was to dismantle, clean and put back together the engine on Puck's 54 Panel. Of course this meant rebuilding lots of the small components which make up the engine ..... Carburetor, Fuel Pump, Distributor, etc.  So I took the challenge.

Once I got the motor to the shop, I stripped it down like a drunk 17 year old boy would do to a mature Cougar!!  GEEZ!!! There were tons of parts, bolts and nuts EVERYWHERE!!! YIKES!!  And everything was super dirty or greasy, or both. Whatever, I was all over it and was determined.

55 Deluxe front beam

once I got the beam out, tore it apart and got it sorted ........ Sexy went to town on it. Let me tell you, its tough working around a Sexy Beast like George!!!  Lets get back to the topic. Once it got all cleaned up, we started to line things up and get this mug going.

Seriously, there is a lot of work involved doing up these front beams. Sure any Jack Ass can do a half ass job, but it takes skills and experience to do them right.  OKAY!!

Here are few shots of the disk brakes. They need a little tweaking and modifying.

Barndoor suspension face lift

As many of you readers are aware, the Barndoor suspension is different from the post Barndoor Buses. And when it comes to lowering ............ lots of Fabricating comes into play. The lowering of early Buses, especially Barndoor's, is what the Butcher Shop is best at. OKAY!!  The owner of the bus, Paul Smoot ( a very well known & respected Beetle restorer ), approached us for some alterations to the already lowered bus and other minor modifications.  Lots of work and fabricating awaited us.

Upon my return from India, Shop lead, George, put me to work!  FYI, my absence from my blogging duties were due to a trip to the far east. I will post pictures later on. Now on to business.  The first thing I did was to remove the front end/beam from the bus. On a good note, this bus is very clean and SUPER dry underneath. This is one very dry 1955 Deluxe!!

Removing the beam involved some heavy duty wrenching, but it didn't take much to get it out of there.  Not bad for a one man job. OKAY. (bloggers note: if you see a hairy individual underneath within the images posted? That is the Shop Supervisor making sure things got done properly. Remember, I'm only an apprentice.

Update on Linda's European Beetle

It's been a while since we've heard about Linda's progress on his European Beetle.  This is what he had to say and with a few pictures.

" I washed the tin today in gasoline and then hit it with some Meguiar's Paint Cleaner/Polish and then waxed it with Meguiar's Gold Class Wax.  The shroud and a few small pieces are still in incredibly nice and glossy original paint.  You never would have guessed it beneath those decades of dirt and grime.  It actually looks far nicer in person than the pics convey. "

All I can say is if you weren't there ............. you lost out BIG TIME!!!  This event by far was EPIC!! This Big Wednesday was also the largest with participants, surfers and VW's, according to Rich Kimball.  I'd have to say 80% of the participants where there by 5:00 am awaiting the gates to open. By 6:00 am we were all suited up and paddling out into the line up.

We had food for days! The grill was kept lit from the we got there till we left. I can safely say we all gained at least 5 lbs that day. Again, the Cambodians hooked us up with the Pork! The other white meat. OKAY.

As our annual ritual, we departed after the sunset. Which was about 8:00 pm. ALL FREAKIN DAY AT THE BEACH.  I was in the Basque Country last year and missed out. But Mundaka made up for my loss. OKAY.  This event, Featherly Park and Hessisch Oldendorf are by far my favorite events.  Mark your calendars for next years event. It always lands on the 2nd Wednesday of August.
