Pokey, the real "little old lady from Pasadena" ride ...... It's done!!!

What can I really say!? Words cannot describe how I feel at the moment. It all started out with Alex and I having a conversation about his 55 Beetle. It then turned towards my stock pile and why I wouldn’t have a running VW at the up coming OCTO week!!?? My usual excuse, not enough time. So Alex made the time! He actually got the guys together to come out one afternoon and knock this out! There really wasn’t much left to do. So Alex sends out an email to set a date and time, all agreed. Well, except one but lets keep that under wraps. Come that morning all the guys from the 80’s LA crew showed up! Alex, Nelson, Robert (aka VWKIDD) and Marcos. I had everything lined up and ready for us to get this mug going.

On a funny note, I was personally called by an individual who some of you may know and may figure out who it is?? Wink Any hoot, this negative individual basically called to laugh at me/us about getting the beetle to run and drive on the same day!! The joke is on you trick!!  CALLESE!!!

Anyways, in the end it was an awesome experience. The weather was perfect, as the days prior were super hot, and nothing negative could be said about this task.  It’s good to know  I have friends like these guys who are willing to give me a hand. This beetle now runs, drives, stops and looks super cool. Full functional beetle. The only thing left to be done is install the front windshield. No biggy.

Here they are, the 80’s LA crew. These guys go WAY back. Way back to when the VW scene was exploding, the early 1980’s. From left to right are ………. Nelson, Alex, Me, Marcos & Robert. Aside from being the great friends that they are, these guys have bad ass rides!

Here’s a shot of Nelson and myself prepping to install the engine. Alex was manning my junk floor jack. Need to buy a new one.

After installing it, master Mercedez Benz factory trained mechanic, Robert does some fine tuning and wire work for the charging system.

Voila! The motor is installed. The original 40 hsp engine, all dressed up to original looking specs. Nothing spared! All engine tin powder coated, hardware was cad plated and all other parts are new or rebuilt.

 The beard and I wrenching.

Here is VW Kidd fine tuning what I didn’t get to. Look at how clean and new that motor and transmission look.

These two need to stop screwing around and get back to work! Or where they up to something??

Exposed front turn signal.

Look at that patch of original paint!!!

Nelson and Marcos sorting out the wiring for the front turn signals and installing the new rubbers and the NOS turn signal lenses.

Getting scolded by the man. Need to work harder.

The gas tank before. Though the inside was chemically treated.

The sanding/painting crew at Arredondo’s Auto Painting.

Alex going to town in his spray booth.

The finished product installed.

Here’s VW Kidd sorting out the charging system. This guy knows his shit!

Nelson taking a crack and tightening the bolts. NEXT!!

Now Marcos is taking a crack. With the strength combination of both, they got tightened up.

Pokey, the name of the beetle given by the original owner. Literally, a little of lady from Pasadena.

Turning it on for the first time ………. And it started right up!!!! Gotta love the Butcher Shop!

Shot of the rear interior.

Empty floor, awaiting the og interior.

Installing the rear seat

Here it is will all the interior in it. The headliner is intact, nice but could use a little help here & there. The Dash is freaking amazing! This coming weekend I will clean that dash up really nice.

Here is VW Kidd revising all of our work.

And VOILA ………… the finished product. As many of you know, Black rides are tough to keep clean. It’s a little dirty but come this weekend I will make it shine a little better. That patina looks awfully wicked, as the Brits would say. Alex will be photographing the beetle once we figure out where to do the photo shoot. I want a call back ground, something rustic or nostalgic.
