Pokey, the real "little old lady from Pasadena" ride ...... It's done!!!

What can I really say!? Words cannot describe how I feel at the moment. It all started out with Alex and I having a conversation about his 55 Beetle. It then turned towards my stock pile and why I wouldn’t have a running VW at the up coming OCTO week!!?? My usual excuse, not enough time. So Alex made the time! He actually got the guys together to come out one afternoon and knock this out! There really wasn’t much left to do. So Alex sends out an email to set a date and time, all agreed. Well, except one but lets keep that under wraps. Come that morning all the guys from the 80’s LA crew showed up! Alex, Nelson, Robert (aka VWKIDD) and Marcos. I had everything lined up and ready for us to get this mug going.

On a funny note, I was personally called by an individual who some of you may know and may figure out who it is?? Wink Any hoot, this negative individual basically called to laugh at me/us about getting the beetle to run and drive on the same day!! The joke is on you trick!!  CALLESE!!!

Anyways, in the end it was an awesome experience. The weather was perfect, as the days prior were super hot, and nothing negative could be said about this task.  It’s good to know  I have friends like these guys who are willing to give me a hand. This beetle now runs, drives, stops and looks super cool. Full functional beetle. The only thing left to be done is install the front windshield. No biggy.

Here they are, the 80’s LA crew. These guys go WAY back. Way back to when the VW scene was exploding, the early 1980’s. From left to right are ………. Nelson, Alex, Me, Marcos & Robert. Aside from being the great friends that they are, these guys have bad ass rides!

Here’s a shot of Nelson and myself prepping to install the engine. Alex was manning my junk floor jack. Need to buy a new one.

2.JPG

After installing it, master Mercedez Benz factory trained mechanic, Robert does some fine tuning and wire work for the charging system.

Voila! The motor is installed. The original 40 hsp engine, all dressed up to original looking specs. Nothing spared! All engine tin powder coated, hardware was cad plated and all other parts are new or rebuilt.

 The beard and I wrenching.

Here is VW Kidd fine tuning what I didn’t get to. Look at how clean and new that motor and transmission look.

These two need to stop screwing around and get back to work! Or where they up to something??

Now Marcos is taking a crack. With the strength combination of both, they got tightened up.

Pokey, the name of the beetle given by the original owner. Literally, a little of lady from Pasadena.

Turning it on for the first time ………. And it started right up!!!! Gotta love the Butcher Shop!

Here it is will all the interior in it. The headliner is intact, nice but could use a little help here & there. The Dash is freaking amazing! This coming weekend I will clean that dash up really nice.

25.JPG

Here is VW Kidd revising all of our work.

26.JPG

And VOILA ………… the finished product. As many of you know, Black rides are tough to keep clean. It’s a little dirty but come this weekend I will make it shine a little better. That patina looks awfully wicked, as the Brits would say. Alex will be photographing the beetle once we figure out where to do the photo shoot. I want a call back ground, something rustic or nostalgic.

15th Annual OEBC SPRING PICNIC & CAMPOUT

This post needs to start off with a typical So Cali saying ……… WHAT AN EPIC WEEKEND!!! This camping VW show was more fun then any 3 shows put together! Seriously. Words cannot describe what a weekend everyone encountered. The positive feedback was astronomical. This event gets bigger and bigger each year. On Sunday alone, there were 471 aircooled rides present. By Saturday afternoon the camp ground was jam packed. Mad props to the Wolvereen, Corona Ryan Hously, Tiffany McDonald and the rest of the Orange Empire Bus Company posse. Without their hard work, this event would never take place. A well organized outfit.

Lets talk about the camping portion of this weekend. As I have mentioned before, this is my favorite weekend when it comes to VW’s. 3 days of camping, bbq’n and VW’s. So come Friday morning, I wake up with butterflies in my stomach and super anxious to collect Pück and head out to the park. Featherly Park is located in Yorba Linda, Orange County. It’s basically an RV Campground, but once a year it’s a VW campground. Once we arrived, we unpacked all of our gear, pitched our tent and sort out the necessities for a good camping weekend. While relaxing having a few pints …… comrade and Cuñado come rolling in. 5 minutes later, Maurice leads the rest of the Campbodians with Serg in the end.  Later that afternoon Dustin & Luiz Ruiz (both members of the up and coming HEILITE MAFIA organization) show up. Then, yes more, the German Folks roll in. Those guys hooked up those sweet little cabins towards the back.  Gradually folks start rolling in through the late afternoon. By sunset the bulk of the crowd was settled. It didn’t take much for our spot to get going once we arrived. The grills were on most of the day, filled with pollo, carne asada, ribs, trip tip and lula kabobs. Needless to say the pints being handed out left and right. Not much was left out to enjoy this weekend. And this was the first day.

I’d have to say to anyone who’s never been …………… make it out one day! You will not be disappointed.

Here is what the campsite looked like when we arrived.

And this is what it looked like after a few hours.

This is a very nice original paint camper. I forget the camper company? Wasn't a typical one. The owner, Brandon, is in the works of redoing the camping interior. The inside of this bus is insane!! A true Cali bus.
