I figured I’d write about this item separate from the other parts I posted. Now this is a strange item offered back in the early 50’s. A steering column gear shifter!? I’ve never seen one of these before? Have you? It is a very interesting aftermarket item offered back then. There is also a letter from Volkswagen stating they don’t approve of this product. It’s basically a disclaimer. It’s dated February 14th 1952. What is interesting is the letter is in English but the product and installation information is in German! Go figure!? Though a pretty cool item to have in your “Private CollectionS".

About a good 13 years ago, I ventured across the pond for 3 reasons. First – to hit the Bad Camberg Treffen in Southern Germany. The second reason was to visit my two good friends Henrik und Thomas Andersen whom live in Copenhagen, Denmark ……….. The third reason was to tag along on a parts hunt with these guys across into Sweden!!! I remember clearly sitting anxiously at LAX awaiting for my flight to Dusseldorf, thinking of all the stuff yet to be seen. Once I arrived in Germany, I caught my connecting flight to Copenhagen. And VOILA! There was Henrik waiting there for me with a massive smile! So off we went to the Ice Cream parlor ……. these guys knew I love ice cream. Or out there – Gelato! Once settled in we discussed a game plan and off we went very early in the morning to the port to catch the ferry over to Malmö, Sweden. The ferry ride was a couple of hours, but that was nothing compared to the drive we took. Long drive needless to say. First place we went was a Volvo repair shop out in the forest. Literally nothing was around, with the exception of the tiny village. Apparently this Shop was a VW repair shop during the 50’s/60’s. Up in their attic area was loaded with doors, W-deck lids and other misc parts. Good thing I brought an extra pair of chonies/knickers with me as I freaked out at what we found!? Of course this was the norm for these two guys as these are the guys who come to the USA with SUPER rare stuff!
A second trip was needed as this time we went to visit an old friend of theirs, Kurt. Kurt as well lived way out in the boonies. He basically has no neighbors and probably has to drive about 20 minutes to the nearest gas station or grocery store? But he did have tons of room. The interesting part about his property is that it was completely surrounded by the forest, therefore hiding all his stash! This includes parts and cars. Though Kurt was an interesting character. He only sold what he felt he should sell that day!? Go figure!? Though he wouldn’t allow us to walk over to where all the buses & beetles were sitting ( and yes, whatever rides you are imagining of??? They were there), he showed us his “used parts” section. There as well were W-deck linds, doors and what!!! He eventually opened up and took us to where he kept all the good stuff, or the nicer stuff should I say …… the NOS stuff!! Here is where I found a few door handles, reflectors (the Frese K-1282), bake-o-lite dome lights and the Hella accessory license plate light housing & lense. Talk about finding a diamond in the rough!
The long journey back was well worth it, needless to say. Though we did end up breaking down, but we sorted it out. But HOLY SMOKES the stuff these guys would pull. WOW! Any hoot, the images below are of what I was able to make pictures of, since I was too busy loading up the car. Also are the parts placed on display.
And here is a shot of me super early in the morning leaving Denmark and making my way to Sweden!
And this is Malmö, Sweden. ( I should have taken more pictures )
W-Deck lids galore!
And here I am posing with some of the treasure.
This is me all wet while loading up the ride with the treasure.
Now here is the aftermath and now part of the "Private CollectionS"
I truly don't believe there are words for the images with the parts you will be seeing.
This is the real deal right there! Probably the hardest part to find when replacing or restoring a 1954/1955 Barndoor. An NOS Frese ~ K1282 reflector.

Took this shot when no one was around my bus at the HOT VW'S DRAG DAY'S, held at the Irwindale Speedway track.

Just a shot of my bus at last year's Christmas Toy Drive in Pasadena held at the Tommy Burger's.

Well, it looks like this was the last Drag Day's held at the Irwindale track. Apparently the rumor is true! They are shutting this facility down for good. On a good note, this event will be held at the Fontana Speedway. Lots of beautiful cars in hand. Though I was lazy this time around and hungout at my spot. But I did manage to take a few shots of both Comrade's 1955 Deluxe and my 1954 Kombi.

Just some random shot's I took at O.C.T.O. last year. A handful of us set up a line up for some cool pictures.

Here is a little self promotion on my part …………. I was awarded with the BEST STOCK VW at this event! Two reasons for my posting. The first one is I was super surprised. I was blindsided and I never expected this award especially with all the beautiful rides there!! The second reason is …….. while working on my Bus with my buddy, EL CRAIG, a few weeks ago. I kept telling him that I was going to win best of show at some coming events. So while at the Lab Show & Shine, I was joking around with EL CRAIG and Hector that they shouldn’t have bothered showing up as I was going to take top honors. And of course this comment was made after a few cerveza’s. When I heard all the commotion I thought something had went wrong up front. Then EL CRAIG looks over and me and said I WON a tropy! I was like ….. WTF!!??
So here is my 15 minutes of fame and glory! Ha ha ha ha.
On a side note, I do have to say the only one who will really get this posting is my good friend ……. EL CCCRRRAAAIIIGGG
Here's a shot of my Bus chillin right smack in the middle of the Lab's Platz! Verstehen sie mich! This is probably the main reason for my award. LOCATION!!!!
No matter how much the hatter’s make fun of me for raising my Bus back up to Stock Height …….. YES! I’M TALKING ABOUT YOU SCOTTY!!! I do have to say my Bus looks BAD O DEE!!!! Think it doesn’t!?
Yours truly with smiles and all ..............

What a surprise this event turned out to be. A great turn out with beautiful rides on hand with a positive vibe, regardless of the sketchy weather. I’m talking about the Montclair’s The Lab VW Aircooled shop, ran by Vic Menjivar. I had heard about this gathering taking place last year but wasn’t on que when the actual date was. But this time around I was well informed, anxious and ready to start hitting some local shows. Reason, my Bus has been sitting for a very long time. So needless to say I was jones’n for some VW action! Think I wasn’t!? J Upon arrival, folks started gradually to roll in and take up spots as the “platz” was filling up quickly. Lucky for me I arrived a tad early and was able to situate my bus with a nice view. Tons of people from all over Los Angeles and the Inland Empire were on hand. And needless to say the generous raffle, which pleased the crowds. There was also food trucks to the side! That was a treat of it’s own.
I also need to mention: this event was a collaboration with The Lab and Frank of INSTAGRAM fame, SOCAL_AIRCOOLED. Czech him out on Instagram, “socal_aircooled”. This guy takes very nice pictures!
In the end this turned out to be, not only a good event but a good day. Yours truly took top honors in the STOCK VW class! Now that was a real surprise as I’m not a trophy seeker nor do I expect & seek recognition. It’s all in good fun and whom ever gave me the prize …….. L’Chaim to you!
The Volksfamilia, my big homie Ishmael, was pimping out his very impressive art work! I was blown away by all the time, effort and energy this kid puts into his art work!! Czech him out on Instagram ........... Great guy!! Mola's Chaval!!!!
Here's a shot of my Buddy Hector's Kubel/Thing ......... bumping the sounds!!
And this belong's to my EL CCCCRRRRAAAAIIIIGGGGG !!!!!!!!!!!
Now this was a really cool bus ....... Gene's custom 1957 Kombi with an early Westfalia interior. Very cool bus!!
I LOVE THIS PANEL!!!!!!
Here's a shot of Hera's Barndoor Panel. This guy also own's a 1952 Standard and a 1954 Single Cab.
This was one BEAUTIFUL Split beetle! Stook out like a sore thumb ...... which is a good thing.
Here's Eddie's Split Window ........ I dig the flat paint rather then the Shiny stuff everyone goes for.
The Old Skool Obsession guys ..............
Now this is probably my favorite beetle at the show. This mug caught my attention when it rolled in. There were a handful of shiny beetles there which, in my opinion but what do I know I'm a Bus guy, didn't come close to the perfection of this ride! The stance, the detail and the perfection! Kudos to the owner of this Beetle.

Every morning before I head out the door I prepare my coffee while I let Ciccolo cruise out in the backyard before I bounce. Though this time we had a visit from the natives. Yes, the wild Parrots whom fly around all over the San Gabriel Valley. Lucky for me I had my camera handy and took a few shots before they flew off. There were 4 Parrots perched on the telephone poll and wire up very high. I managed to snatch these few shots of nature at its finest. And boy are these guys SUPER loud! But it’s all good.

So this past weekend I dedicated Sunday to my bus! Gave it a major cleaning job! Something I rarely do. I believe the last time I gave her a thorough cleaning was about 4 years ago or so? Yes, it’s been that long. First thing I did was pull all the seats out and do a major cleaning job inside. After washing and wiping down the inside, I went to town on the seats. Then I scrubbed both the cargo area and front cab floor mats. Now those things were FILTHY! Once mounted I began cleaning the windows then hit the tires with some armor all dressing. The window rubber received the same treatment. And finally, I hit all the shiny parts with some polish cream. Good thing my bus isn’t a Deluxe or I’d have to dedicate the entire weekend for polishing. In the end I was really happy with the finished product. Now I will start hitting both the smaller local shows as well the bigger ones. If you see me at a show after this posting???? Come by my bus so I can brag about all the hard work I’ve done to it!!
If you look really closely you can see the few items I polished ......... the grab handle ends, the horn button ring and the starter button. Not much eh
And here is the finished product!
Here is a bonus shot ......... My Ciccolo cruising in front of my bus
