Barndoor video

You guys gotta see this video. Too cool for school is just putting it lightly. Florian George of Lyon, France put this video together of Ken King's 1952 Sunroof Standard, his posse at work, rolling shots and the adventures in the rides. A very well put short film on Ken and his stable. (his posse too) There is also footage of the Canadians, Ken & posse, making the voyage to Southern California for last year's Barndoor Gathering. Florian is the guy who found, bought and shipped back a 1952 Deluxe 23 window which he found in Canada. He also made the voyage to Southern California with the Canadians. If Florian's metal work is as good as his camera work!? Watch out! This bus of his will turn out to be a monster!!!

Again, thank you Florian for sharing your art with us and the world. Props to you too Ken, and your posse.

Today, Wolfgang finished the driver's side curtains for the 71 Westfalia. They came out pretty nice. Sometime today she will finish the rear hatch curtains. Then eventually the sliding door curtain. That one will be a chore.

This past Saturday the San Gabriel Mission held it's first annual car show. It was a small cool show. The only down fall it was Africa hot and on asphalt. Did a quick run by and took some shots. There were some really nice rides out there.

Painting

Today I got my painting on! Picked up the manifold, heater boxes and exhaust from the sand blaster. On a side not, I never understood why people go through the trouble of sanding these parts down on their own!? So much work involved. Why wouldn't any spend the $20 to get this stuff sand blasted and be done with it!? Any hoot, Once I dusted of any remaining sand, I started bombing canning these parts with a special paint which will withstand high temperatures.

Another thing, the exhaust which came with the 1963 beetle, looked a bit odd? I'm no beetle guy nor do I claim to be an expert. But I was informed it is a South African 40 hsp exhaust?? Whatever that is? I will take some more detailed shots and post them.

Guacamole

A lot of folks often ask me how I go about making a mean Guacamolé!? Especially the overseas folks. My first response is …… “  I have an Avocado tree “.  Having an Avocado tree does help, but you can always buy them at the grocery store. Though mine are better! Obviously the main ingredient is the Avocado’s, and a few other items which compliment the Guacamolé. It’s a pretty simple process, but can take some time. I always prepare my Guac with some pints, 80’s music and no one around. It’s easier and it gets done quicker. Those of you who know me, know I’m a chatty Charles!

First off, you need Avocados. There are two options here in So Cali. You either go to your local grocery store and pick up a few Avocados or you can go to your back yard, like me, and pick a few from your tree. Wink My tree is huge and LOADED with them.

IMG_8333.JPG

IMG_8336.JPG

This tree gives these precious gems twice a year. Literally HUNDREDS of them! Can you imagine how much money you can make off these Avocado's? At the grocery store they are abut $2.00 each. YIKES!

IMG_8341.JPG

IMG_8350.JPG

OK, now you need a few key ingrediants to get you started. Cilantro, lemons, tomatos, garlic, onions, chile, salt & pepper. You will also be needing a good sized bowl, cutting board, spoon (for scooping out the avocado from it's shell), a large spoon (for mixing), sharp knife and a Molcajete.

IMG_8677.JPG

This is a Molcajete. I will be using the Molcajete to grind down the cilantro and garlic.

IMG_8678.JPG

IMG_8682.JPG

Nothing like fresh Avocado's from Southern California's Périgueux region. Wink

IMG_8687.JPG

All scooped out from there skins and ready for the mixing process.

IMG_8688.JPG

IMG_8692.JPG

You have to make sure the garlic is minced into the cilantro, or you will end up with small pieces of garlic. You don't want this to occur cuz some non eating garlic folk may have that one bite and give them the garlic zap! But on a good note for folks who don't like garlic, they do after they try this Guac. The combination of the this mixture with the chile, salt & pepper ........ tres bon!!

IMG_8695.JPG

IMG_8690.JPG

Voila! Here is the finished product. It taste better then what it looks. Those of you who've tried it will vouch for me.

Westfalia luggage rack parts

As some of you know, I’ve been on the hunt for some small parts for the luggage rack portion of the pop top for my 71 Westfalia. Under the assumption these being Bay Window parts they’d be a sinch to track down. NOT!  These little bits are getting harder and harder to find. Luckily my buddy and Westfalia guru, Lind Bjornsen, tracked down these bits for me. The footman hooks are all nice and complete. The small clip which holds the mirror inside the closet in place, also came with the correct hardware. Also got the small round floor center piece where the table pole fastens on to. Another piece I couldn’t find are those rubber spacers which mount on the end of the luggage rack. One seems NOS?, and the other is beat down like someone’s booty we all know.

So the plan is to wheel wire the footman hooks and the round center floor piece and I will have them cad plated. Makes sense plating the hooks since they will be outside. Heading out to Pomona tomorrow, let’s see what surfaces??

40 hsp engine

Today I pulled the 40 horse power engine out from the shop and getting it ready to strip down. All the tin will be sand blasted and then powder coated. All hardware will be cad plated, and all other items (spark plug wires, cap, coil, etc) will be replaced with new stuff. Should like nice when it's done. But first I must tear it down. Pictures to come of this.

The Ramsy Snape Memorial

This past weekend we celebrated the life of a friend, father and enthusiast, Ramsy Snape. Our good friend Ramsy pasted away a few weeks ago so several local clubs got together to honor our fallen comrade. Lots of support was present ............ Hosts: German Folks, Straight Buggin, Bus Boyz, Campbodians, Single Cab Mafia and the Barndoor Mafia, just to name a few, were all on hand. This gathering was held at Prado Park in Chino, Euskalifornia. Lots of local stores and suppliers donated LOTS of merchandise to be raffled off. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SHOPS!!! Aside from the great weather we had, tons of food was grilling non stop!

Big shout out to Ant of the GFK for promoting this gathering and the gathering of all the raffle prizes.

Cleaned and installed .......... I have NO words!?

What a BITCH! My bus was a filth bucket. Literally. I spent all day Saturday cleaning it, then intalling the window. Today I sorted out the the stationary curtain behind the closet and installed back all the camping interior. I am BEAT!!

14.JPG

I do have to say ..... that is really nice original camping interior. Looks better in person.

15.JPG

Here's a shot of the funky era curtain material. The reproduction original looking material was not within my budget, so I went along with something of that era. The material was more for use, rather then looks. This is some pretty thick material, so the sun won't be creeping in when I'm passed out in there.

Major cleaning and installation of window rubber

Got up really early this morning to tackle this job and had no idea it was going to take all day! This thing was pretty filthy. I'm glad I did this, though I had to pull out all the interior to get to the passengers side rear window. Removing this also allowed me to replace the curtain material with the beat ones still intact. Long day.

BMX heaven

Here is something different to write about. For me at least. During the Dino’s Bomb Squad bbq at Lincoln Heights Plaza de la Raza Park, I ran into a buddy of mine, Josh “el Chambelan”, who’s a hardcore vintage BMX bick enthusiast and collector. Very impressive collection of Vintage BMX bicycles. I’ve always chatted with Josh about BMX bikes and exchanged stories. I raced BMX prior to the ABA sanction existing. Back in 1975 to be exact. NBA & NBL were the sanctions back then. The Van Nuys Youth Center and the Azusa tracks were the one’s I frequent.  I joined the ABA sanction in late 1977. I was also at the first ABA national held at the Azusa track in 1978. I can go on and on about all the old bmx races I attended and took part of back in the 70’s and the 80’s. So Josh tells me of a vintage BMX show which is put on once a year at the Whittier Narrows BMX track, the Sunday before the June Pomona. So I attend ………………. HOLY SHIT!!!!! I was gasping for air upon arrival!!!! I saw bikes I owned as a young child and bicycles I’ve always wanted. I still own my SE RACING 24” FLOVAL FLYER. I wish I would have brought it over and had my BMX Hero, Scott Breithaupt ( who is also a pioneer, inventor and innovator of the early BMX era, also the founder of SE RACING). Also walking around was another BMX legend …… Bob Haro, as well Eddie Fiola. I also saw a few familiar faces from way back then. What was more amazing was all the memorabilia and the displays.

Chingos of Gracias to my buddy Josh "el Chambelan" for notifying me of this event. PURO LHTS !!!

The ClassicS

The VW ClassicS. This has always been the show to attend and experience. Folks from every corner of the world imaginable flock out to sunny southern California for this event, and the other bbq’s/open houses/parties/events/shows which go on during the week. I’ve been attending this event since 1988 and it seems like it gets bigger each year? I have no idea how event organizers go about the voting process. What a headache since there are countless awesome VW’s scattered all over the place. This year the organizers added a new category which is long over due ( at least 25 years! ). The PATINA class. Many guys, like myself, who’ve been into the original paint rides or what it is referred to now, The Patina look, were really glad this Patina movement is finally getting some sort of recognition.  Hopefully by next year Pück’s “Patina’d” 1963 Beetle will be in attendance next year. Mazol Tov to the winner of this new Patina Category. BTW, I’ve liked this bug since I first saw it.

The ClassicS has always been a social event for myself, with so many friends from all over the world congregating in one location. Lots of clubs debut their newest creations as well other clubs with their old faithful’s. What makes this event for me is the massive bbq my buddies, The Campodian’s and the GFK, put on. Food galore!

This event is truly massive with endless VW’s for the eyes to see. A must for sure.

Here is a shot early in the morning of us getting ready to leave the Holy city of Slam Gabriel and make our voyage to Irvine.

Pop Top canvas installation ........ FINISHED!

What other way would I have spent my Father's Day ....... finishing the installation of the pop top convas for my Westfalia. As they say in Périgueux, California ... PUTAIN!!!  What a bitch of a job!! I finally finished it. Like I mentioned in one of my prior postings, I ran into some trouble. But I managed to sort it out and now it looks CHI CHI'S. It's getting there but there is still lots to do.

Now next weekend I plan on removing all of the camping interior and giving Señor Camper a MAJOR cleaning. While having all the interior out, I will remove this board piece, then remove the old curtain material and replacing it with the new material I got. Once all this stuff is out and before reinstalling it. I will install the glass with its new rubber. So in other words, I will most likely spend my weekend on my bus ....... Again Laughing
