What a BITCH! My bus was a filth bucket. Literally. I spent all day Saturday cleaning it, then intalling the window. Today I sorted out the the stationary curtain behind the closet and installed back all the camping interior. I am BEAT!!
I do have to say ..... that is really nice original camping interior. Looks better in person.
Here's a shot of the funky era curtain material. The reproduction original looking material was not within my budget, so I went along with something of that era. The material was more for use, rather then looks. This is some pretty thick material, so the sun won't be creeping in when I'm passed out in there.

Got up really early this morning to tackle this job and had no idea it was going to take all day! This thing was pretty filthy. I'm glad I did this, though I had to pull out all the interior to get to the passengers side rear window. Removing this also allowed me to replace the curtain material with the beat ones still intact. Long day.
Here's the project supervisor making sure all is working smoothly ........... my faithful companion, Chewbacca.

Here is something different to write about. For me at least. During the Dino’s Bomb Squad bbq at Lincoln Heights Plaza de la Raza Park, I ran into a buddy of mine, Josh “el Chambelan”, who’s a hardcore vintage BMX bick enthusiast and collector. Very impressive collection of Vintage BMX bicycles. I’ve always chatted with Josh about BMX bikes and exchanged stories. I raced BMX prior to the ABA sanction existing. Back in 1975 to be exact. NBA & NBL were the sanctions back then. The Van Nuys Youth Center and the Azusa tracks were the one’s I frequent. I joined the ABA sanction in late 1977. I was also at the first ABA national held at the Azusa track in 1978. I can go on and on about all the old bmx races I attended and took part of back in the 70’s and the 80’s. So Josh tells me of a vintage BMX show which is put on once a year at the Whittier Narrows BMX track, the Sunday before the June Pomona. So I attend ………………. HOLY SHIT!!!!! I was gasping for air upon arrival!!!! I saw bikes I owned as a young child and bicycles I’ve always wanted. I still own my SE RACING 24” FLOVAL FLYER. I wish I would have brought it over and had my BMX Hero, Scott Breithaupt ( who is also a pioneer, inventor and innovator of the early BMX era, also the founder of SE RACING). Also walking around was another BMX legend …… Bob Haro, as well Eddie Fiola. I also saw a few familiar faces from way back then. What was more amazing was all the memorabilia and the displays.
Chingos of Gracias to my buddy Josh "el Chambelan" for notifying me of this event. PURO LHTS !!!

The VW ClassicS. This has always been the show to attend and experience. Folks from every corner of the world imaginable flock out to sunny southern California for this event, and the other bbq’s/open houses/parties/events/shows which go on during the week. I’ve been attending this event since 1988 and it seems like it gets bigger each year? I have no idea how event organizers go about the voting process. What a headache since there are countless awesome VW’s scattered all over the place. This year the organizers added a new category which is long over due ( at least 25 years! ). The PATINA class. Many guys, like myself, who’ve been into the original paint rides or what it is referred to now, The Patina look, were really glad this Patina movement is finally getting some sort of recognition. Hopefully by next year Pück’s “Patina’d” 1963 Beetle will be in attendance next year. Mazol Tov to the winner of this new Patina Category. BTW, I’ve liked this bug since I first saw it.
The ClassicS has always been a social event for myself, with so many friends from all over the world congregating in one location. Lots of clubs debut their newest creations as well other clubs with their old faithful’s. What makes this event for me is the massive bbq my buddies, The Campodian’s and the GFK, put on. Food galore!
This event is truly massive with endless VW’s for the eyes to see. A must for sure.
Here is a shot early in the morning of us getting ready to leave the Holy city of Slam Gabriel and make our voyage to Irvine.

What other way would I have spent my Father's Day ....... finishing the installation of the pop top convas for my Westfalia. As they say in Périgueux, California ... PUTAIN!!! What a bitch of a job!! I finally finished it. Like I mentioned in one of my prior postings, I ran into some trouble. But I managed to sort it out and now it looks CHI CHI'S. It's getting there but there is still lots to do.
Czech it out .......
Now next weekend I plan on removing all of the camping interior and giving Señor Camper a MAJOR cleaning. While having all the interior out, I will remove this board piece, then remove the old curtain material and replacing it with the new material I got. Once all this stuff is out and before reinstalling it. I will install the glass with its new rubber. So in other words, I will most likely spend my weekend on my bus ....... Again

WOW! What a great turn out, show and weather. It couldn't have been any better. Folks from all over the world flocked to this event. Though no Dutchsícans But plenty of really cool buses on hand to make up for this. Major props to all the folks involved putting this show on.
The world famous Everrett Barnes of the Samba fame! Pimping out his propaganda. But no cookies!?

The after math of two days of camping is the grand finale for Sunday, The Orange Empire Bus Company's annual Spring Picnic. This is a truly awesome show. No asphalt with the blazing sun beating down on you ........... it's all the grass with plenty of trees for shade. And it's free for air cooled VW's. What more can you ask for!? This is a family orientated event with lots of activities for eveyone. One event everyone looks forward to is the "Slow Drags". This year's winner was Eric Koplain and runner up was BDM's very own, Comrade Dougie. Lots of traders and vendors were on hand, as well the event's main sponsor, Wolfsburg West. In the end, everyone was bummed it was all over but on the bright side, it gives us all something to look forward to.
Here are shots from the "Slow Drags".

I know it's a bit late for me posting these images, as I am still recovering from that awesome weekend. Way too much good food, booze, laughs and what ever else I forgot to mention? Any hoot, this is by far my favorite show here in the good ol USA. BTW - The weather was awesome!

The June Pomona Swapmeet is always the big one and the one to attend. But what made it more worth while attending was the official host club for the day. THE ORIGINAL GERMAN FOLKS KLUB. The guys who put on the show invited the GFK to be the premier club for this specific show. Not only was the GFK on hand, several long time friends were invited to share the glam light with the club. What an AWESOME day it was!! Could not get a clear shot of the cars once they were all parked. Way too many people kept coming in and out of the isle where the cars were parked and non stop photographs were being taken. This is just a teaser for what is coming up next weekend.

What a beautiful day for a bbq car show on the grass. I keep hearing across the pond about the weather being SHIT out there. Out this way nothing but sun. Shorts, t-shirts and flip flop weather. Any hoot, its nice for a change to hit a different type of car show and enviroment. Like last year, this event was taking place at La Plaza de la Raza, LINCOLN HEIGHTS. My old stomping grounds. Grills were every where you looked, as well nice rides sitting pretty right next to them. So many beautiful cars out this year and with a much bigger attendance.
Now this was my favorite ride out there ...... CHILE VERDE. This early 50's Chevy truck. This ride was laid the fuck out! Straight gangster ramfla!
V-Dubs, Bombas and Viclas ..... all in the same spot!
Now this ride you will most likely not see again. A 1936 Ford Coupe, but with a factory truck bed!!?? What the fuck!!?? I have never seen one of these before. Bones of the GFK filled me in on this rare bird, apparently not many of these rides with this factory option still exist. There are some which exist, but SUPER rare! This things was BAD ASS!!! I spoke to the owner and he confirmed it was a factory option. This guy has a serious fleet of old rides. Most of them in the 30's, but all restored to stock condition. He's also the owner of that 30's Panel and the 1936 Ford Convertible.

Boy ......... this roof was filthy! Took serveral wash downs to get it all off. The end result was really nice. Now I will start mounting the canvas and I have an idea its going to be a bitch!?
The previous 71 Westfalia I owned, still had these tassles in tact. I ended up reusing them. But these were shot! Wonder if someone makes them?

Avoided a night out on the piss last night, just to get up early and start the removal of the pop top canvas which was beat down and at one point during it's life, an attempt was made to salvage it for a period of time. Not a Bay Window expert but this seems to be the original canvas? I have one of these before and during the removal of the canvas I did not have to remove this rubber piece over lapping the material. I need to take a picture of this and post it. Any hoot, this material was super dirty as well everything around it. Now that I removed it, the cleaning process begins and a little tweaking here and there. But over all, everything looks in good shape. Should turn out nice once it's done.
Some nice Patina action going on right there ........
And as they say in Périgueux ....... VOILA!! Ciccolo and Chewbacca made sure the job was done right.
Ciccolo is down for some camping.

Who says there never isn't enough time, well this is true. This has turned out to take longer then what we expected. But it's getting there. This weekend I got all the rear end and brakes sorted out. Hopefully by the end of the week the same will go for the front? Keep your fingers crossed. All the hardware was cad plated. The seals, brake shoes, cylinders and drums are all brand spankin new!

The Wolf and I have been on the hunt for curtain material for the 1971 Westfalia and have come across a good candidate. Sure I would like the original print, but it's very expensive and to be honest not very practical for what we will be needing it. From most hardcore guys who like going camping and have the og curtains in their buses, they say the material does not keep the sun from blasting in. So we figured get something which is thick and will help the cause. We found this material at curtain material store and this pattern comes very close to matching both the interior scheme and the pop top canvas, as well the Tent. I think? So this may be a winner. Chime in and give us your opinion??

As you all know, 1971 was a great year for the Volkswagen bus. This was the last year for the up right Type 1 engine and the first year for front disc brakes. For these reasons the 1971 VW bus is a very saught after bus, especially the Westfalia model. Sure everyone desires the early Westfalia or any early camper conversion, but these Bay Windows, in my opinion, are much more practical and are very comfortable rides. Without a doubt!
After going through the brake system and figuring out what I need to get this pupply going, the power brake booster needed to rebuilt. A good buddy of mine redid this one. I should have taken a shot of the booster prior to being redone. What a difference. And what a difference disc brakes make when you need to stop at the drop of a dime.
Big Shout out to my homie, Jose Rubacalva, for rebuilding the booster and master cylinder at a HOMIE price! Te bañas cabron!!!!!

If you are all about camping, grilling, kicking back, eating, chillin, trail bashing, more eating .......... then this is the event to hit. What a surprise for me. I had plans for this weekend way back 4 months ago and was pretty bummed when I knew I wouldn't be able to make it. But last minute plans made it possible for me to join my buddies. I heard about last years event and how great it was and yada, yada, yada. WOW! So I get up super early and head out to the town of Julian, which is about a 50 minute drive east from Escondido .......... San Diego for all of you who aren't familiar with Euskalifornia. What a beautiful and scenic drive it was, and the little town of Julian was really pretty. Worth the visit. BTW - this event was put on by Maria & Serg Vasquez, they are members of the resort and hooked us all up. But Dan, known as "Braukuche" on the Samba, organized the reservations & camp layout (which are limited) and the trail bash. Big Kudos to those three because without them, this wouldn't have been possible.
As soon as I arrived, morning, I was handed a beer and offered food .......... and off we went. The resort has a grass area for sporting events and out door concerts. That's where we were set up for camping. Come about 10:00 am Saturday, the troops were rally'd up and off to the trails we went. Must have been a good 10/15 mile trail? And very scenic. When were arrived back to the camp ground we were greeted by everyone who was there in their motor homes. Most folks were talking about the day they owned a VW bus. They were also taking pictures of themselves next to the buses. The evening ended with a fire and more eating. Like I said, if you get a chance to come to this event, you will not be sory.
Here is a link to the thread started on the Samba with other enthusiat's pictures they made of that weekend.
And the best picture for last .......... Cuñado Ear giving the famous pose. Think he didn't!!!

Finally got some time and hit the tire shop to have the tires mounted on to the wheels. They look really nice and I'm sure they will nicer once I mount them. I also scored on some re-chromed original hub caps. I need to clean them up and paint the emblem on.
Wednesday, March 27, 2013
Finally got back the wheels from the powder coater. Sir Chubbs a lot was taking his sweet time, but after bribing him with a cheeseburger ....... the wheels should up instantly. BTW - I replaced the clips and what a chore that was.
Sunday, March 24, 2013
Now this was a chore in itself. After dealing with mounting the new rubber on the vent wing, I had to make sure it was aligned properly before I could mount the longer side glass which over laps this one. German engineering. ja!
Ciccolo says .... " When we going camping dawg!? "
Saturday, March 23, 2013
Thought I'd take a picture of this really cool Patina'd Beetle.
Friday, March 22, 2013
This was easy. The old one's were crumbling as I removed them.
Thursday, March 21, 2013
So after receiving my window rubber from Gary at DER BUS HAUS, Ciccolo and I got up early and went to town on this mug. The old rubber was pretty beat up. What a difference the bus looks with new rubber. A good cleaning was needed once the glass/rubber was removed. Once mounted on the hatch ....... we both smiled.
Ciccolo taking a rest after watching me do all the work. But he's down to go camping.
Wednesday, March 20, 2013
Did a little cleaning up on the Westy. Though I think I will end up removing the interior for a deep cleaning and make it easier installing the windows. Damn this interior is nice! It still blows me away how original and complete this interior is! HOSTIA!!!!
Monday, March 18, 2013
Today I cleaned up the side windows and installed the new rubbers. Now I need to mount them on to the bus.
Sunday, March 17, 2013
Saw this really cool Patina'd Bay Window up in Dena. The cool part about this sighting .......... it was a chick driving it!
Saturday, March 16, 2013
As I was driving down the 10 Freeway I notice a Deluxe cruising up in front on me, so I grab my camera and take this shot. But then I noticed it was a double door deluxe!!?? Is this think for real? I have never seen it before? Has anyone seen it at an OCTO meet? That is a rare bus if it really is what it is. But it being so close to St. Patty's Day .......... I'm calling Shenanigans!!
Friday, March 15, 2013
This weekend was FREAKING beautiful in the new south of France, Euskalifornia! It rained this past Friday but come Sunday the sun was in full force. All this week it will be 86 degrees / 30 Celcius. So I took advantage of this painting weather. I sand blasted the bars which mount on top of the rear portion of the Camper. Also blasted the metal dash which sits on top.
Thursday, March 14, 2013
First off, allow for me to be a little negative. This was sort of a bitch to do. Remember, I am an EARLY bus guy. VERY EARLY It took some time but I managed. And a very clean specimen to begin with. This was a replacement window, the previous one was tore back like someone's booty we all know Any hoot, after ripping the old rubber off and giving the chrome and glass a proper cleaning ........ WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! Once the new rubber was installed .... OY VEY. It looked great. You Bay Window experts, what do you think?
Now I was informed that this piece is the most important part of this vent window. Apparently that little bolt and wrapped clip seem to always be rusted out!? But this one is super nice and clean.
And VOILA! The finished product. I cannot wait to mount this on my bus.
Wednesday, March 13, 2013
Well, been out and about for a while and figured I better get my ass back on track with these damn projects of mine. (tyres is not mispelled. It's spelled out in the Queen's English. REALLY) Well after severa months of searching for 16/80r 15's for Pück's beetle, I found them. And at a very affordable price.
